Leeds United can follow this appeal precedent with Pascal Struijk after Harvey Elliott injury

Leeds United will be hoping that defender Pascal Struijk is able to benefit from the Football Association's decision to overturn Son Heung-min's red card against Everton in November 2019.

Struijk was dismissed early into the second half of Leeds' 3-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday afternoon after inflicting a horror injury on Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott.

Elliott's ankle initially appeared to be facing the wrong way as he tried to get up off the floor, with medical reports confirming that the 18-year-old had dislocated his left ankle.

Struijk was shown a red card for the challenge that was initially waved as a play on by the referee and was later dismissed for the tackle after Craig Pawson had seen the injury Elliott had suffered.

Many have varying opinions on whether Pawson was right to take the injury into account or if he should have judged the tackle as an isolated incident.

However, the Dutch defender will now miss Premier League games against Newcastle, West Ham and Watford, that is, of course, unless the Football Association overturn his red card as they did to Son 2019.

Son, similarly to Struijk, committed an innocent tackle on Everton midfielder Andre Gomes which left him with a broken leg. Martin Atkinson initially produced a yellow card before later deciding to send the South Korean international off as he left the field in a distressed manner.

Having said that, Tottenham appealed Son's red card to the FA and an independent regulatory upheld the claim of wrongful dismissal, meaning that Mauricio Pochettino was free to choose Son as normal.

Leeds have decided to appeal the red card shown to Struijk on Sunday afternoon, and judging by the events that unfolded at Goodison Park in 2019, there is a real possibility that Pawson's decision could be overturned.
