Leeds United can end Kalvin Phillips to Man Utd speculation with Jack Grealish transfer trick

Leeds United have been down this road before.

The transfer market is a never-ending vortex and it's an area where Leeds have learned from past mistakes.

The Whites have become adept at tuning in to a player's expiry date and moving them on if necessary, with Pontus Jansson a prime example.

Or, more recently since their promotion to the Premier League, ensuring they hold all the cards if any club does come to the table.

Since returning to the top-flight, United have been incredibly proactive with their contract renewal policy, rewarding and upgrading key performers to represent their rising stock.

Patrick Bamford ended any speculation over an Elland Road exit by penning a new five-year deal. A commitment from club and player to ensure his best years are spent on West Yorkshire, amid some speculative links surrounding Tottenham.

Whilst few actually expected the 27-year-old to be on Spurs' wishlist had Harry Kane departed, Leeds quickly ended any question marks on his future.

Similarly, Illan Meslier was the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain, only 12 months after he penned a permanent deal at Leeds.

Whilst others may have baulked at the suggestion of upgrading the 21-year-old's terms, Leeds saw another opportunity to tie down a rapidly-growing asset.

That's why the latest reports linking Kalvin Phillips across the Pennines to Manchester United and Manchester City will be of little concern. The 25-year-old is not going to push for a move out of his boyhood club any time soon, as confirmed by his agent, Kevin Sharp, in the summer.

Therefore, it makes sense to renew Phillips' contract too. His last deal came in 2019, a five-year renewal after Leeds had lost to Derby County in the play-offs. With offers on the table from the Premier League, Phillips rewarded Leeds for their loyalty.

Now is the perfect opportunity to return the favour. There are plenty of parallels between Jack Grealish and Phillips, such is the importance of their hometown club in their decision making.

There may come a day that Phillips can no longer ignore the allure of the Champions League, as Grealish did this summer. However, unless a club is willing to meet an astronomical price tag, Phillips wouldn't be leaving, regardless.

Leeds have an opportunity to end any transfer speculation by refreshing Phillips' terms. The ambition of the club is clear and it's difficult to see the England international playing hardball.

At worst, a release clause could be agreed that would give Leeds an irrefutable amount of money and help Phillips realise his potential of playing at the elite level.
