Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa sets date for new contract talks

Marcelo Bielsa will wait until the end of the season before opening talks over a new contract with Leeds.

Leeds are delighted with the club’s progress under Bielsa in their first season back in the Premier League for 16 years and are keen for him to remain.

However Bielsa, who has been at Elland Road since June 2018, will not deviate from his policy of waiting until the campaign is over before beginning discussions over his future.

The former Argentina, Chile and Marseille boss is 100 per cent focused on the team and believes opening talks while they are still playing could be a distraction.

Leeds are relaxed about Bielsa’s stance and he has agreed at the end of his previous two campaigns to carry on for another season.

His last contract renewal was on the eve of the current campaign in September and Leeds are quietly confident Bielsa will commit to another season at Elland Road.

Bielsa, 65, has clocked up his longest stint in charge of a club side during his 31-year coaching career with Leeds and has said he is prepared to stay for a fourth season.

“I’m very comfortable living and managing in England,” said the Argentinian recently. “Annual contracts do not mean I am not open to staying here longer.”

Chairman Andrea Radrizzani will back Bielsa again in the transfer market this summer and director of football Victor Orta is already working on targets.

Bielsa’s transfer kitty has been swollen because of the £50million injection of cash from the San Francisco 49ers this week and they have increased their stake in Leeds to 37 per cent.
