Leeds United being top is more important for those chasing than for us - Marcelo Bielsa

Leeds United are top of the Championship.

The Whites moved to the division's summit with a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic yesterday.

Patrick Bamford's brace sealed all three points to leave Marcelo Bielsa's side with seven points from their opening three games.

It's early days, but a strong start to the season has filled those in around the city with confidence they can once again challenge for promotion.

Some may have had doubts after a fair bit of change in the summer, with fan favourites such as Pontus Jansson, Kemar Roofe and Jack Clarke all being sold.

However, Ben White and Patrick Bamford's early performances have helped to steady the ship, while Helder Costa is an exciting proposition off the bench, for now.

When posed the question about moving top of the pile, Bielsa answered in the only way he knows how, methodically.

The Argentine chief's reply made a lot of sense, of course, as he pointed out leading the table at this early stage is only important if you're not the team sitting pretty at the top.

Speaking to the press after his side's 2-0 win over Wigan, he said: "Of course I can only evaluate this positively, but sometimes there are things, when you receive something positive, that are not important and when you are not receiving this it is maybe more important.

"When you are top right now, you cannot say it’s important. If we were not there we might say it was important."

Leeds will be hoping to create some daylight between themselves and the chasing pack on Tuesday night when they host Brentford at Elland Road.

The game will see Jansson return to West Yorkshire, just months after he was sold by Bielsa and Victor Orta.

The popular Swedish defender joined Brentford in a £5.5m deal to ease Financial Fair Play concerns.
