'Leeds United are chasing him' - ex-manager drops Daniel James hint as Man Utd trio told to leave after Cristiano Ronaldo arrival

Former Premier League boss Tim Sherwood has urged Daniel James to leave Manchester United after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

A whirlwind day on Friday saw Ronaldo reunited with his former club, snubbing their city rivals Manchester City in the process.

The blockbuster move pushes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men into title-talk territory, with Ronaldo set to spearhead the Old Trafford club's attack this season.

Even at 36, the Portuguese is still considered one of the best players in the world but his arrival will likely have a trickle-down effect at Carrington.

Fringe players such as James have now been pushed down the pecking order even further, and Sherwood believes that the Welshman, along with the likes of Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, should move on for the sake of their careers.

"I think a few players will need to go," Sherwood told Premier League productions.

"They need to hand in a 25-man squad, there’s a few there who are not getting in the squad.

"Jesse Lingard misses out, I think he needs to go and play for West Ham. He had a great time there last year, he looked like he wanted to go and play football and he was outstanding. I think it’s his time to leave the club."

James has attracted plenty of interest over the past few seasons which usually coincided with his spells out of the team.

Leeds United are long-term admirers, famously having a transfer for him break down while he was with Swansea City. Leicester City, Brighton and Everton have also been linked with the 23-year-old.

Sherwood revealed that Leeds are "chasing" him and believes his "audition" in the opening-day rout at Old Trafford could sway a move for him.

With Jadon Sancho also in the equation at United, James is likely to struggle to feature under Solskjaer.

Sherwood continued: "I think Daniel James might leave as well. Leeds are chasing him and he played well against them in the first game of the season. It was a great rehearsal for him. He’s got outstanding pace and directness. I think he’ll be another one [who leaves].

"For me, Anthony Martial will be moved on. If they’ve got a home for Martial and they can get the right money, I think they will shake hands and say it never worked out."

James has four years left to run on his Old Trafford contract.
