Leeds United and EFL rivals prepare retained lists as players set to discover their fate

Hundreds of footballers will find out whether they will be released by their respective clubs this week.

EFL clubs, including Leeds United, are scheduled to submit their retained lists prior to the weekend.

And with no delay announced yet, hundreds of footballers could be out of work and left facing uncertainty with clubs needing to make decisions on out-of-contract players despite not knowing if the current season will resume.

The season remains on hold with EFL meetings taking place today (Wednesday) and on Friday.

But with no announcement yet on whether the retained lists still need to be published this week, clubs are working to the original deadline, according to The Telegraph .

Scunthorpe United are just one of the clubs who have already announced which players will be released with others working on deals to extend players' contracts.

According to Bristol Rovers midfielder Alex Rodman, around 1,400 players from the EFL could go unemployed this summer.

Rodman, Rovers' PFA representative, claims many EFL clubs will not commit to deals unless they receive assurances football will be played.

“I don't see us coming back any time soon, possibly not at all. That's the biggest thing we're waiting for now,” Rodman said on BBC Five Five .

“From June 30, I think there are 1,400 players out of contract in the Championship, League One and League Two. We look at the potential of having no fans until possibly Christmas, maybe even into 2021, and I think there's a real threat that the new season will be delayed.”

The EFL say they are committed to continuing the season in the Championship, while a more uncertain fate awaits League One and League Two.

Clubs in tiers three and four are expected to vote on whether to continue the season in Friday's meeting.
