Leeds Trinity University College announces £8,000 tuition fees

Leeds Trinity University College has today proposed charging an annual tuition fee of £8,000 for home and EU undergraduate degree courses.

The Horsforth-based university college is the latest to announce its fees - the University of Leeds is charging £9,000 a year and Leeds Metropolitan University has already announced £8,500 fees.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Trinity said:

"This decision has been reached by the board of governors after careful consideration of the new funding arrangements that have been put in place by the government. The funding that is being lost by the removal of the teaching grant must be replaced.

"We also need to invest in learning and teaching, our campus and facilities so that future students benefit from a first-class experience and we continue to see high levels of student satisfaction and excellent graduate employment.

"It is part of our tradition to recruit students from under-represented groups. In setting the fee at £8,000 and by providing a generous package of financial support targeted at those most in need of it, we will ensure that students with potential can benefit from higher education regardless of their circumstances. Over 30% of the additional fee income will be invested in financial support, access and retention measures in 2012 /13."

The proposed annual tuition fee for foundation degrees at Trinity is £4,250. The fees are due tocome in from the academic year 2012/13

Professor Freda Bridge, principal and chief executive, said:

"The fee of £8,000 has been carefully considered. It strikes the right balance between what is affordable for students and their families and the resources Leeds Trinity needs to provide a high-quality education for its students."
