Leeds train station the busiest in the north - but another Leeds station has just 265 passengers a day

New figures have shown Leeds train station to once again be the busiest in the north of England.

The newly-revamped transport hub saw 30,838,554 passengers flood through its doors in 2018/19, a fraction more than Manchester Piccadilly (30,251,948).

However, the number of commuters was down by almost one per cent from the previous 12 months. On the other hand, passenger numbers at Manchester Piccadilly saw a huge 9 per cent spike.

The second busiest train station in Leeds is Guiseley, with 1,224,376 passengers, while Horsforth is third, as 1,096,574 people travelled through here.

The Office of Rail and Road has also pulled together the numbers of the quietest train stations across Leeds.

Cottingley is the only train station in the city to register less than 100,000 visitors. Just 96,604 people used it in 2018/19, which equates to a measly 265 a day.

Micklefield (165,600) and East Garforth (220,824) are the second and third least busy stations respectively.

Next on the list of the quietest train stations is Kirkstall Forge, which opened to great fanfare in 2016 as part of a wider £400 million development in west Leeds.

Its 232,386 passengers might not seem an impressive total, but it is up by more than 50 per cent from the year before.

Cllr Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council and transport leader of West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport, said: "Against the backdrop of regional disparities in funding, these figures highlight the strong return that can be secured through investment in the North of England transport network.

"This report highlights Leeds station’s status as the busiest in the North of England. With passengers numbers expected to double over the next 30 years, it is essential that investment in this gateway for the region, as well as the local network, matches our ambitions for further growth to help address the capacity crisis across West Yorkshire.

"To deliver the modern, reliable rail service we need and deserve, the Government must commit to HS2 phase 2b and Northern Powerhouse Rail with a city centre station in Bradford."

Unsurprisingly, London train stations took the top four spots. London Waterloo was named the most manic for the 16th year in a row, with figures showing that a staggering 94 million commuters passed through it over the course of 12 months.

Birmingham New Street is the busiest outside the capital, with 48 million passengers using it in 2018/19.
