Leeds train station chaos until at least 4pm after man rescued by police - but station now open

Trains are now running from Leeds station after all lines were closed for several hours so police could rescue

All services were suspended and the platforms were closed at around 7am on Thursday, May 30 after concerns were raised about the man's welfare.

Thousands of passengers were left stranded, but British Transport Police officers brought the man to safety shortly before 10am and all lines were reopened at around 11.15am.

British Transport Police confirmed he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

However, National Rail says 'trains will continue to be severely disrupted with delays of up to 180 minutes, cancellations and diversions.'

The disruption is expected to continue until around 4pm, but a number of rail replacement buses are running to and from the station.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "Train services have started to resume at Leeds station and the platforms have reopened.

"British Transport Police and Network Rail partially closed the station earlier today due to a vulnerable trespasser at the station.

"Although the station has now reopened, there is still widespread disruption to train services and bus replacement services are running.

"Anyone who is planning on travelling to, from or through Leeds is advised to delay their journey until later today and to check before they travel via National Rail Enquiries or with their train operator.

"Network Rail is working closely with British Transport Police and train operators to get passengers moving and we would like to thank all those affected for their patience."
