Leeds told to brace for floods as bleak 24-hour rain warning issued by Met Office

It's not just the clocks going back this weekend that will signal the impending arrival of winter, but also the weather.

Leeds is being told to brace for heavy downpours as a yellow weather warning has been put in place by the Met Office.

It means that homes and businesses could flood, public transport could be severely disrupted and major roads could be closed.

The rain will begin to fall at around midday on Friday, October 25 and continue right the way through until mid-afternoon on Saturday, October 26.

The good news is that it should have cleared up in time for Sunday's Abbey Dash, when thousands of people are set to descend on the city centre and Kirkstall.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
