Leeds today - moor barbecue debate rumbles on and Paula Radcliffe

Good morning Leeds

Lots of big community issues in Leeds on the agenda today.

I'll be looking at the launch of a petition to support proposals for a new railway station at Kirkstall Forge which is threatened by government cuts, the launch of a new blog as residents fight plans for an incinerator in East Leeds and the reaction of local residents to yesterday's anouncement that the council has postponed the closure of South Leeds Sports Centre in Beeston.

I'll also be previewing next week's big council executive board meeting, which sees cuts on the agenda.

Here's what's making Leeds tick today

"So to get this right, Leeds council is spending £26,000 for a golf buggy to drive around Woodhouse Moor with two park wardens doing what exactly?!"

Runner Paula Radcliffe is to be patron of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and take part in this year's Leeds 10K – despite being seven months pregnant at the time, reports the Yorkshire Post. And Olympics supremo Sebastian Coe sprinted into Leeds to inspire the community in the run-up to London 2012, says the Evening Post.

Leeds Liberal Youth has launched its new website and blog.

"When I come home from work on the bus I pass this churchyard from the bus stop. It's one of those things you get so used to seeing that you don't really see it, but it looked especially pretty this evening so I snapped it."

- Leeds snapper Steve Wilds writes about his photos of Headingley Churchyard.

The final preparations are being made to the state-of-the-art new Morley Leisure Centre ahead of its opening next week, reports the Morley Observer and Advertiser.

The HM Consul General for Trade and Investment Italy, Laurence Bristow-Smith will be visiting Leeds next week to present on the business opportunities the World Expo 2015 which is taking place in Milan, presents for companies in Yorkshire and Humber, reports Marketing Leeds.
