A Leeds thug has been locked up after ramming a police car during a 100mph chase on a motorway.
Winston Ashman, 21, risked lives as he tried to get rid of officers after shoplifting hundreds of pounds worth of goods from Guiseley Retail Park.
Leeds Crown Court was shown police dashcam footage of the red Vauxhall Astra reaching speeds of up to 100mph on the afternoon of December 28 last year.
Prosecutor David Ward said police tried to pull the car over but Ashman sped off down a slip road onto the M1 southbound at 80mph, narrowly avoiding colliding with a heavy goods vehicle.
The car left the motorway, approached a roundabout at 90mph and sped around it.
It drove over a verge and back onto the motorway, heading northbound and overtaking vehicles at 100mph.
One of the pursuing police vehicles tried to keep Ashman in the outside lanes but approaching junction 41 and 42 he swerved and attempted to ram it onto the slip road.
The court was told the car then stopped due to a mechanical fault and Ashman and the car stunk of cannabis.
Cosmetics worth £685 and clothing worth £146 were found in the car, which had two female passengers in it.
Mr Ward said Ashman and a female had taken the items from Boots and Next and left without paying for them.
Ashman, of Throstle Avenue, Middleton, Leeds, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and two counts of shop theft.
He has 39 previous convictions for 88 offences, including for violence, dishonesty offences and vehicle crimes.
His first ever court appearance was shortly after his twelfth birthday.
Shila Whitehead, mitigating, said his best mitigation is his early guilty pleas.
She said Ashman is one of 13 children and one of seven whom his mother placed into care.
Ms Whitehead said her client had numerous carers and felt like he was passed from pillar to post.
Sentencing, Judge Robin Mairs said: "It is one of the most appalling examples of dangerous driving that I have seen.
"You were determined.
"You were quite willing to cause damage and run the risk of catastrophic damage.
"You had no regard for the lives of any other road user, either civilian or police. You had no regard for the lives of your passengers."
Ashman was locked up for 14 months and disqualified from driving for four years and eight months.
