Leeds taxi drivers to hold another huge protest in fight against policy change

A peaceful protest is set to go ahead in Leeds this week as taxi drivers continue to fight against the Suitability and Convictions Policy.

GMB Union will hold the demonstrate outside Leeds Civic Hall, in Millenium Square, tomorrow (Wednesday) from 12pm to 2pm.

This comes after Leeds Taxi and Private Hire Organisation (LPHDO) continue to protest against the Suitability and Convictions policy.

The union will be calling for a full review of the Suitability criteria for taxi drivers and the campaign is also calling for "better deals for taxi drivers."

The Suitability and Convictions policy was introduced in February 2020 by Leeds City Council but a number of concerns have been raised about it by taxi drivers.

Chair of LPHDO Ahmed Hussain has previously told LeedsLive, the policy means drivers could lose their licence for “any slight wrongdoing”.

In the past, the group has protested against the council’s 'six-point policy' that could see drivers suspended if they get more than six points on their license.

Mr Hussain vowed in January this year they would continue to protest to highlight problems with the policy.

The authority's policy page states "the council is entitled and bound to treat the safety of the public as the paramount consideration" and that standards are set "set high to give the public the assurance it requires when using taxi services."
