Leeds takeaway launches deep fried super-sized chicken sushi roll

Anything tastes better when it’s deep fried.

So, it’s no surprise the new deep fried chicken jumbo sushi roll from Leeds’ takeaway Waki Maki is going down a treat with customers.

The humongous roll, which is made up of eight smaller sushi rolls, has been deep fried to perfection.

It means customers can get the best of both worlds – with the crispy coating catering to their deep-fried fix, and inside offering all the traditional elements of the Japanese roll.

The gigantic sushi roll can be bought with either a chicken or vegetarian filling – each costing £12.

And each roll comes with a generous slathering of katsu mayonnaise on top.

Explaining the inspiration behind the roll, the Waki Maki owner said: “We’ve specialised in chicken katsu curry for quite a while now and everyone loves it, so the roll is our unique take on a katsu curry.

“So, we wanted to create something a bit different that appeals to everyone. We took the best bits of a katsu curry and turned it into a roll.

“When people think of sushi, they often think of raw fish, which can put some people off. By launching a chicken roll, it offers all the authenticity of sushi, but with a slightly different twist.

“It’s deep fried which is a big plus. Everyone, especially people in Yorkshire, loves food that’s deep fried. By offering a deep fried chicken roll we’re hoping to bring sushi to a new audience.”

He added: “The roll is so big, it’s a meal in itself, you don’t need to eat anything else. So far, its been going down a treat with our customers."

Since launching in April last year, the restaurant, which is exclusively takeaway, has always tried to do something a bit different.

“We noticed a gap in the market that there weren’t any exciting variations of sushi in Leeds,” he said.

“We want to be as creative as possible with our food.

“I can’t tell you what yet, but every month we’re going to create some new sushi variations – we've got some exciting options in the pipeline.”

Waki Maki is currently open for orders from Thursday to Sunday – but the owner hopes one day to launch an eatery in the city.

“I don’t want to have a huge restaurant,” he said. “I’m hoping in the future we can open a small eatery that serves a whole range of unique sushi food.”
