Leeds street wakes up to police cordon as man hit with hammer and car and van windows smashed

A man was hit with a hammer and his car and van were vandalised in an early morning attack on Easter Sunday.

The attack took place on West Grange Drive, Belle Isle, at around 7.15am on Sunday, West Yorkshire Police confirmed this morning. It is believed the victim was taken to hospital although it is not known if his injuries were serious.

Windows on the man's Volkswagen Golf, parked in a driveway, and an Iveco flatbed van, parked on the street, were smashed, possibly with a spade, according to witnesses.

A cordon, approximately 30 metres long along the street, remained in place this morning while police carried out their inquiries. Shocked residents woke to find part of their street taped off.

"It's a shock to see this happening here," said one.

"I didn't hear anything but you get used to this sort of thing round here," another said.
