Leeds street horror as residents wake up to 'unconscious man covered in blood' in road

Leeds residents have told of their shock, horror and anger after waking up to find a man 'covered in blood' on their street.

People living in the area around Lovell Park in the city centre say they were greeted by "blood and glass" strewn across the road. It comes after a brawl between two men broke out on Thursday (March 30) morning.

One mum has claimed to have seen a man "laying unconscious" in Wintoun Street when she woke up. West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that at around 6.57am today two men were seen fighting in Lovell Park Grange, Leeds.

Upon arrival, officers found a man with head injuries. He was rushed to hospital in an ambulance to receive treatment. A man has been arrested of suspicion of wounding with intent.

A Leeds mum who lives close to the scene said: "I got up for work at 5am and at 6.40am I heard shouting. Then I came away from looking and heard it getting worse between the two men who had pulled up in a van.

"Then it went quiet and I thought they'd driven off but then saw a man laid out unconscious and covered in blood on his face. No one here knows them - we think the attacker was drunk."

She added: "There’s broken glass on the street too. I think it escalated from just a fight. This is quite a quiet street we think they turned on here by chance. I rang the police and they came in 20 minutes. Everyone is in shock and what I saw was shocking; it was a brutal attack. It was quite horrific. It doesn’t happen very often."

Referring to the police cordon, she added: "The length of time this has taken is a lot. I need to pick up my grandkids. We know that police need to do their jobs. No one has been able to get to work if they drive. We don’t feel like we’ve been taken into consideration.

"We don’t normally have stuff like this happen and it’s nothing to do with anybody on this street. We’re being held hostage by other people's stupid ways."

Another woman who lives nearby said: "This incident is out of order. It’s a lovely area. It’s annoying to see the cordon there but we understand it has to be done. It’s a real shame that two men fought on the street aggressively - it’s ridiculous.

"It’s scary. Another neighbour phoned me crying because there was so much blood. It’s a lovely area with neighbourhood watch where we all look out for each other but this is worrying and a sign of the times."

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 6.57am today (Thursday), police received a report of two men fighting in Lovell Park Grange, Leeds. Officers attended and found a man with head injuries. He was taken to hospital for further treatment.

"A man was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent. Enquiries are at an early stage and ongoing."
