Leeds stance on first Arsenal transfer bid for Raphinha speaks volumes

Leeds United are expected to reject Arsenal's opening offer for Raphinha - but will not stand in the 25-year-old's way if their valuation is met.

The Brazil international has made a huge impact at Leeds over the past two years, netting 17 Premier League goals in 65 appearances. After enjoying a fine maiden season in English football last year, Raphinha's influence has grown at Elland Road over the past 12 months after he played a pivotal role in ensuring Jesse Marsch's side retained their top-flight status.

Unfortunately for the Whites, Raphinha's dazzling form has not gone unnoticed, and various European clubs have flirted with making a move for the ex-Rennes man in recent weeks. But it's Arsenal who have tabled the first concrete proposal for the coveted star, according to The Athletic.

Mikel Arteta is aiming to fine-tune a squad that exceeded expectations last year, but missed out on Champions League football at the final hurdle. The Spaniard is bidding to go one better next season - and Raphinha has been identified as the perfect fit to bolster the Gunners squad.

The report outlines that the Londoners have made a formal offer for the winger, who is also being chased by Barcelona and Tottenham. However, their proposal is expected to be rebuffed as it falls 'well below' Leeds' valuation of their talisman.

However, the report goes on to outline that Leeds are 'sympathetic' to Raphinha's desire to progress and 'do not intend' to stand in his way if a club does meet their valuation for the winger - which is reportedly around £50million. Leeds have accepted that Raphinha is unlikely to pen a new contract at the club and are prepared to cash in this summer.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will return with an improved offer, but it's well-known that Raphinha is angling for a dream switch to Barcelona; although their financial issues complicate the prospect of a deal being struck. If a move to the Nou Camp fails to materialise, it is believed that Raphina's preference would be a move to Chelsea, as they can offer Champions League football and a realistic chance of winning major trophies.

As well as firming up their interest in Raphinha, Arsenal are expected to try and accelerate a deal for Gabriel Jesus in the coming days. The Manchester City striker is also reportedly valued at around £50m and is Arteta's number one choice to become the Gunners new No.9.

The Londoners have already boosted their attacking options for next season with the £34m arrival of FC Porto star Fabio Vieira. The 22-year-old notched six goals and clocked up a staggering 14 assists for the Portuguese giants last term.
