Leeds soaks up the sun on first Bank Holiday weekend after pub restrictions eased

People flocked to Leeds city centre to enjoy the first Bank Holiday weekend since coronavirus restrictions on pubs and bars were lifted.

It was a scorcher on Sunday with clear blue skies and sun adding to the festival atmosphere.

Covid rules still in place mean customers must remain seated when drinking, so outdoor table bookings were like gold dust as the temperature reached the low 20s.

Kirsty, the assistant manager at Parkside tavern on Merrion Street, said it was the busiest day she's seen in recent months.

"We've been fully booked all day and we've got a lot of walk-ins as well," she said.

"People who have booked a table are wanting to stay out longer as well because it's so sunny they're enjoying it and don't want to move."

Sitting outside here you could hear music from several different bars and some of the people stumbling between them had clearly been enjoying the party for a few hours.

Kirsty added: "There's a lot of shots and cocktails being drunk today.

"I think we're expecting it to be busy again tomorrow but a bit calmer."

People perched on Parkside Tavern's packed roof terrace looked down over the grassy area next to St John's Church, where dozens of people sunbathed with a drink.

"We're waiting for our table later and we can't get in anywhere so we just thought why not go to Tesco and sit in the park," said Jules, sat on the grass with five other friends.

Plenty of people had the same idea in Millennium Square, where Wetherspoons and Revolution hopefuls spilled out under the trees in the square.

University of Leeds students, Sasha and Claire, had been offered a table inside Revolution but decided to "skip it and wait for one outside."

"It's not been like this for ages, we're not sitting inside," said Sasha.

Inside Revolution, the requirement for table service only in a huge venue saw staff hurrying to and from the bar to replenish trays laden with pints and cocktails at breakneck speed.

"We've been really so busy," admitted the rushed-off-her-feet manager.

"But we've had a great day," she grinned.
