Leeds shoppers queue for five hours in bid to beat Boxing Day sales frenzy

Eager shoppers in Leeds were up early to get their hands on Boxing Day bargains - with one man admitting he was waiting outside the shops at 6am this morning.

The Boxing Day sales traditionally see huge crowds of people queuing outside major retailers on the high street.

And this year was no different, with shoppers telling LeedsLive they were waiting at the front of the queue to bag themselves a bargain.

Perhaps the most dedicated Boxing Day sales shopper was Lewis Brempong, 41.

He arrived at Junction 27 Retail Park at 6am this morning - but he got to the shopping park slightly earlier than he needed to.

“We came at 6am, but we didn’t know it only opened at 11am!” he said.

“So we sat in the car waiting.”

Instead of travelling back home to Leeds, he got back in his car and waited for five hours before leading the queue to get into Boots when it opened at 11am.

“It was worth the wait,” he said.

“I found a couple of bargains there.”

A number of shops were closed today though. Among them was Next, which traditionally has mammoth sales that attract huge crowds from the early hours of the morning.

Lewis said: "A lot of shops are shut, especially Next. It normally has good bargains and very decent prices but unfortunately today it is shut."

But on the whole, Junction 27 was remarkably quiet, with hundreds of empty car parking spaces at the out of town retail park.

Many more dedicated shoppers made their way into Leeds city centre though.

While some parts of the city centre were relatively quiet, bigger crowds of shoppers were seen around Briggate and Trinity Leeds, with queues forming outside trainer stores Footasylum and Kick Game.

Among the early risers was 20-year-old Caitlin Kemp, who was shopping with her friends Jack and Phillip.

She said: "We came out for about 11am when the shops opened to try and beat the queues.

"There were little queues, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be with the sales. It wasn't that bad.

"Boots has been really good with all the half-price gift sets, so I've stocked up on birthday presents for throughout the year.

"I'm planning ahead and saving myself a little bit of money.

"Primark has been quite good.

"I did last-minute Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve. That was manic. It was absolutely horrendous. I won't be doing that again.

"It was much better today."
