Leeds sees F-35 fighter jets scream over city as RAF issues statement

Two fighter jets were spotted flying over Leeds city centre on Wednesday morning leading the RAF to issue an official statement.

People were left 'suspicious' on Wednesday morning as two 'very loud' fighter jets were seen - and heard - over Leeds city centre.

The planes were spotted over the city centre as well as (perhaps unsurprisingly) near Leeds Bradford Airport, according to eyewitnesses across the city.

It has now been confirmed by the RAF that the pair of F-35 Lightning aircraft were on a training exercise.

A spokesperson confirmed the aircraft were from RAF Marham, in Norfolk, and completed a "routine training sortie" over Leeds.

Witnesses took to Twitter asking what on earth was going on.

@LayeredStrange wrote on Twitter: "2 black fighter jets just passed over Leeds city centre. Both not on radar or ADBS flight trackers. Suspicious."

@georgia24 tweeted: "Very loud fighter jet (?) over Leeds just now"

@PaulLawBlack added: "Er, is Leeds at war with someone?"

@MattZomeal said: "Pair of fighter jets just now over Leeds. F35Bs i think? Sick!"
