Leeds scrooge shunned his road's Christmas lights tradition - now he entertains kids as 'Mr Penguin'

A man who originally refused to take part in his neighbours' Christmas lights tradition has found himself dressing up as a penguin to entertain families from his driveway each night.

Stone Brig Lane resident Rob wanted no part in the growing lights trend on the Rothwell street during its early years, around 20 years ago.

But over the years he has been swayed by the happy faces and money raised for charity.

Some of the more than two dozen houses with lights follow an individual theme and when Rob finally caved he decided to plump for penguins.

He is now known to many as Mr Penguin as he can often be seen dressed in a full penguin costume, standing in front of his lawn filled with brightly lit penguin characters.

He explained: "I've gone for the penguin theme because I happen to be bird watcher.

Gesturing at his outfit, he said: "This was a special purchase, only worn on a few nights of the year."

Rob admitted the penguin suit goes down best with slightly older children.

"Some of the little ones are frightened to death," he said.

"But then again some of the little ones are frightened to death of Santa.

It is Rob's second year dressed as a penguin but he has been putting lights up for 12 years.

"I first said I wasn't going to do anything," he recalled.

"Eventually I decided to put three penguins out but it looked rubbish.

"So then it got to five and each year they seemed to breed well. I've got six somewhere that I can seem to find.

"I think there may now be 40 odd."

You can donate at buckets outside each of the houses or online. More info can be found on their Facebook page.
