Leeds school to close on Monday for deep clean to stop spread of norovirus

A Leeds school is taking extreme measures to stop the spread of the norovirus, which has wreaked havoc on schools across the city.

The Morley Academy has made the decision to deep clean the entire school, because of the "impact" of the illness on staff and students.

The clean is taking place across the whole weekend, but will run into Monday (December 9) meaning the school will be closed.

"At The Morley Academy, we have been monitoring the situation with our own staff and students very carefully", a letter from headteacher Adam Ryder read on the school's website.

"We have reached a point today where we now believe that the virus is having such an impact on our student and staff population that in order to stop the spread of the virus, a full ‘deep clean’ of our premises is required."

Three schools closed in November in Leeds because of the virus, with Morley Newlands Acadmey primary school closing today (Friday, December 6) also.

The Morley Academy is planning to be open on Tuesday (December 10), but will keep parents informed via text message and updates on the website.

The letter continued: "We are grateful for the support and understanding of all of our families during this particularly unprecedented period and we hope that anyone that has been affected feels better soon."

The Morley Academy is a secondary school located on Fountain Street and is part of the Ruth Gorse Academies Trust.
