Kevin Sinfield described Leeds’ Grand Final victory as the perfect ending to his rugby league career.
The Leeds captain, 35, ensured he will head to union a treble winner in the 13-man code, after the Rhinos became only the third club to win the Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield and the Super League title in the same season.
He will now head to union and play for the Rhinos’ sister club Yorkshire Carnegie, and he admitted his league career could not have finished any better. “Without a doubt it’s the perfect ending,” he said. “To top it off with the treble in the final year is unbelievable, and I’m so thankful I’ve been able to play alongside this group every single week.
“These memories stay with you forever, and it’s something I’ll cherish forever. I couldn’t have asked for a better finish with a better set of blokes. It’s not sunk in yet, but I’ll reflect on it in a few weeks when I’m sat on a sun lounger and I’ll be able to reflect on what an incredible achievement this has been.”
Danny McGuire, left, winner of the Harry Sunderland Trophy for man of the match, believes this Leeds side is the best he has played with. “For achievements like today it’s right at the top,” he said. “There’s three of my best mates leaving this club and you really want to send them out on a high. I just wanted to play as well as I could and run my blood to water for this team.
“They deserved to go out on a high. Psychologically we tried to put the guys leaving to the back of our mind but you’re just desperate to ensure it’s the perfect ending for them all.”
