Leeds Rhinos' clash with Catalans Dragons postponed after more Covid-19 cases

Leeds Rhinos’ trip to Catalans on Saturday has been postponed after further positive Covid-19 results in their squad.

The Rhinos were due to travel to Perpignan this weekend following last week’s postponement of their clash with St Helens due to an outbreak in their camp.

Coach Richard Agar said last week he was not confident of the game against Catalans going ahead, with Leeds down to just 14 available players last week after two players tested positive and a number of others were forced to isolate.

That number has now risen to eight following Monday’s round of testing, leaving it inevitable that Leeds would be unable to fulfil the fixture. The sport’s Multiple Cases Group have therefore extended the instruction for the club to postpone training for a further five days, until another round of PCR tests on Saturday.

The clubs have already begun discussions with the RFL and Super League about rearranging the match later this summer, but with two postponements already, Leeds are facing another backlog of fixtures later in the season. They experienced a similar issue last year when they suffered an outbreak among their squad.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield have been cleared to return to training after their fixture with Wigan was postponed last weekend. The Giants reported a number of positive test results last week but they have been given the green light to return this week after a further round of testing on Friday showed no more positives.

That means their fixture with Salford this Friday will go ahead.
