Leeds reacts as city centre buildings evacuated due to bomb scare

People in Leeds have shared their disbelief after buildings in the city centre were evacuated due to a bomb scare.

Police arrived on Queen Street at 11.30am following the discovery of a suspicious package.

They evacuated surrounding roads, including Queen Street, Quebec Street and King Street, on the advice of the army, who are sending their Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team to the scene.

Some workers in nearby offices took to social media to share their shock as they were told to leave their desks and the area.

@amber_lillixo tweeted: "Our work has been evacuated due to a bomb scare in Leeds city centre. Thrilling Thursday!"

And Kym Doll said: "Oh my God, can't believe there was a bomb scare in Leeds. Jesus, I've just been at the train station with my mum! Argh!"

With the army drafted in, plenty of people were concerned by the severity of the situation.

"This day and age we have to be vigilant and take this seriously," commented David Jones.

Meanwhile, Sardar Daljit Singh Malli said: "Won’t be on national news then, only local.

"If it was London they would have put it on national news because it is Leeds they won’t be bothered."

Others were more sceptical. Angela Walshaw said: "It will be a practice run for when it's for real."

Brandon Michio Benson said: "I remember the one in 2017 where they closed off like half of Leeds City Centre - most of Headrow, all of Briggate, market area etc.

"They had the army in and everything for it."
