Leeds Rate My Takeaway's Danny Malin and Sophie Mei Lan's love story as she says they are 'soulmates'

Sophie Mei Lan has said she and Danny Malin quickly realised they were 'soul mates' as she shared the couple's love story on her blog.

Rate My Takeaway star Danny Malin and his vegan health guru girlfriend, Sophie Mei Lan, recently announced they are expecting their first child together. The 43-year-old, who is already a dad-of-two, is set to become a father once again after receiving some unexpected news, a decade on from him having had a vasectomy.

Danny first met Sophie through work. As romance blossomed they met more and more often for coffees and enjoyed each other's company. She made him "laugh and giggle" and has been "supportive and understanding" of his family's situation.

Danny Malin announced his new relationship last year, 22 months after his fiancé tragically died from a heart attack, leaving him as a single father. Danny shared the happy news on social media by sharing a picture of himself and new girlfriend Sophie Mei Lan, who was born in Sheffield and lived most of her adult life in Wakefield.

Ever since Carrie Taylor, 40, died in February 2021, Danny assumed he'd just live out his days as a single dad, just focusing on what's best for his children. But Danny and Sophie quickly figured out they were soul mates and have embarked on their own love story.

When it came to having a baby the pair didn't think their dream would ever come true. Sophie wrote in her blog, mamamei, that herself and Danny had been talking about IVF, assuming they would need a miracle to conceive. She added that she had tried to accept that the pair may not.

On Chinese New Year, when they were sure they were pregnant, a pregnancy test showed a negative result. Sophie wrote: "I felt a weird grief but knowing I had Danny was enough to keep me going and smiling." She told how she would often go home crying to Danny after a woman she taught belly dancing to kept asking if she was pregnant.

One evening Sophie bought a cheap test from Poundland, despite being adamant she wasn't pregnant the test showed two faint lines – meaning she was pregnant. The pair say they were chuffed but concerned and had a late night Asda trip for a Clear Blue test. Sophie took the test in the supermarket loos promising Danny she wouldn’t look until they were back in his van.

Sophie wrote in her blog: "I couldn’t look, I asked Danny to do it as I felt sick." The test confirmed that a miracle had happened and the couple were over three weeks pregnant.
