Leeds primary school slumps from good to inadequate in latest Ofsted report

A primary school in Leeds that saw its Ofsted rating slump from good to inadequate in the space of a few years says it is 'extremely disappointed' with the latest report issued by the education watchdog.

Armley Primary School was marked as a good school during an inspection in May 2014, but inspectors noted a lack of leadership and a significant deterioration in the quality of teaching at a recent visit in February 2019.

It means the school is now rated as inadequate - the lowest mark possible.

The Ofsted report, which was released on Tuesday, May 14, prompted a strong response from interim headteacher James Clay, who promised swift improvements for pupils.

The inspection found that progress made by pupils in reading, writing and maths is 'well below average' and among the bottom 10 per cent nationally, while the current curriculum does not cover the full breadth of subjects in enough depth - with a particular lack of focus on personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education.

Teachers were found to not assess pupils’ learning effectively or have a thorough understanding of pupils’ starting points or additional needs.

Serious concerns were also raised about the leadership team at the school, with governors struggling to hold leaders to account, and inspectors also found the school to be overly reliant on external support.

Some areas were praised though, including the purposeful leadership of Mr Clay and a supporting headteacher from another school, and the strong progress of children in Reception.

Armley Primary School is one of just a handful across the city to be rated inadequate. You can find out the ratings for every single primary school on our website here .
