Leeds 'planning surprise transfer swoop' for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez

Leeds are reportedly plotting a surprise swoop for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Martinez impressed as he claimed the No.1 jersey for himself in the latter stages of last season following an injury to Bernd Leno.

Leno is yet to recover and Martinez kept the shirt as Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield on Saturday.

The 27-year-old has made it clear he is unwilling to stay at the Emirates to be back-up to Leno, feeling he has done enough to prove himself.

And Leeds are monitoring the situation with Marcelo Bielsa willing to sell Kiko Casilla, report the Daily Mail.

The Whites have already signed Ilian Meslier to a permanent deal but could also move for Martinez if they can sell Casilla.

Former Real Madrid keeper Casilla has been erratic at times between the sticks at Elland Road and was banned for eight games last season after being found guilty by the FA of racially abusing Jonathan Leko.

Arsenal initially wanted a fee of £20million for Martinez, with Valencia and Real Betis among the other clubs interested.

But they may be forced to lower their asking price if Arteta decides Leno is his No.1 going forward.

Leeds have been busy in the transfer market since returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

They have already added striker Rodrigo from Valencia in a deal worth up to £30million, and have forked out £13million for German international defender Robin Kock from Freiburg.
