Leeds people asked to celebrate city's refugees

Leeds people are being asked to help the city's refugees and asylum seekers as part of the national Refugee Week.

Liberal Democrat councillor, Reverend Alan Taylor, is encouraging people to consider the plight of Leeds' refugees and help in any way they can as part of
Refugee Week, a national initiative designed to help celebrate the contribution that refugees make to society.

The public are encouraged to do a simple act in mark of refugees, whether it be cook a foreign meal, visit an organised event or join a refugee support group.

Thomas Danby College, which borders Gipton and Harehills ward, hosted the refugee world cup on Sunday to launch the national week in Leeds.

Events today include a celebration of refugee entrepreneurs in Lincoln Green, an introduction to radio/podcasting at South Leeds Community Radio tomorrow and Thursday, a family party on Friday in Lincoln Green and a music, dance and food event which celebrates diversity at the Bangladeshi Community Centre in Roundhay Road.

More details can be found at Network Leeds.

Councillor Taylor said:

"The issues of refugees and asylum have always concerned me. It is great that there is a national campaign seeking to increase peoples' awareness.

"Leeds is a safe and welcome home for many refugees that settle here. I am pleased that our communities have made them feel so welcome.

"I encourage everyone to log onto www.refugeeweek.org.uk, find out more about refugees and try and do a Simple Act to get involved."
