Leeds owner Andrea Radrizanni hits back at 'dirty' tag after FIFA Fair Play award win

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizanni has taken a swipe at the club's critics after they scooped the FIFA Fair Play award.

The Elland Road club won the prize at the Milan ceremony on Monday following their sportsmanship in the Championship match with Aston Villa last season.

Leeds player Mateusz Klich scored to put his side ahead during the clash, but had done so while a Villa player was on the floor injured.

They then stepped aside to let Villa run through and score unchallenged to equalise as a gesture of goodwill.

After collecting the award, Radrizanni tweeted: "Beautiful evening for “dirty leeds” @LUFC winning a fair play award @FIFAcom #TheBestAwards thanks for the invitation #Milano."

Leeds developed a reputation as a 'dirty' side in the '60's thanks to their on-field success with a physical style of play from the likes of tough tacklers Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter and Jonny Giles, with the nickname sticking ever since.

The decision to award Leeds the award for fair play is a particularly controversial one, following their punishment over the 'Spygate' scandal.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa admitted to sending spies to watch rival teams train after being rumbled by Derby ahead of their fixture with the Rams.

Leeds went on to win the tie before later being hit with a £200,000 fine with Bielsa forced to make an apology.

Derby star Mason Bennett clearly found FIFA's decision to give Leeds the award a mockery, by sharing the news on his Twitter account along with three laughing emoji's.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker posted a similar message, with the added addition of the spy emoji for good measure.

FIFA hailed Leeds' actions against Aston Villa as a "commendable act of sportsmanship" as captain Liam Cooper and fitness coach Benoit Delaval collected the award on behalf of the club.

And the Whites wasted no time in celebrating the accolade, immediately changing their Twitter bio to "The official Twitter account of 2019 FIFA Fair Play Award winners Leeds United #LUFC."
