Many parents have different views when it comes to punishing their children for bad behaviour, some harsher than others. It can be a controversial topic.
But for one mum in Leeds, the only way to make her son realise the impact his behaviour has on others was to ensure he understood how he would feel if the shoe was on the other foot.
When the mum found out her 10-year-old son had destroyed the coat of one of his classmates by cutting the sleeves with scissors, she responded emphatically.
The mum-of-six was so angry to hear what her son had done that she decided his punishment would be to give the brand new coat he was to receive himself for Christmas to his victim as an apology.
The mum, who wished to be anonymous, said: "I am so angry and disappointed in him, it is disgusting what he has done and I want to make it very clear to him that it is not acceptable.
"There is no way it was an accident.
"We do not condone bullying in any way, and he will learn the hard way."
She took to social media this morning (Friday) and posted what had happened to a Facebook community group leedsplace in a bid to find the parents of the victim.
She wants to apologise to the parents and assure them that their son will be receiving her sons brand new coat.
This is the first bullying incident the mum has been informed of and she has been assured by the school that it had been dealt with.
However, that wasn't enough for the outraged mum who wants to ensure her son has understood the impact his behaviour could cause.
'It will send the message that you cannot treat people like that'
The 27-year-old said: "Myself and his dad have discussed that you never know somebody's situation. That family could have scrimped and scraped to buy that coat.
"He's going to be really upset, but it will send the message that you do not and cannot treat people like that.
But the angry parents won't just stop there if the bullying continues and have already put got a plan in motion if such incidents should happen again.
She said: "My son will be warned if he does anything like this again. The next time it will be his PlayStation he is handing over."
Many social media users applauded her parenting.
One person posted: "Brilliant attitude, as opposed to 'my little Johnny can do no wrong' or variations of that."
Another posted: "That is how a responsible parent should react, well done. It is a shame there aren't more parents like you."
The 10-year-old went to school today without knowing about his mum's intentions - but he was forced to hand over the coat at the end of school today.
