Leeds mum almost blinds herself wrapping Christmas presents after 'taking a wedge out of her eye'

A Leeds mother nearly blinded herself after wrapping Christmas presents went wrong.

Toni Snelson Krajnik from Scarcroft took a wedge out of her eye out on Saturday while trying to rip cardboard boxes after wrapping presents.

The mother-of-two said they throw the boxes onto a log burner onto their home but first, they break them down.

However, one stubborn and thick box was not “having it” and the 44-year-old kept pulling but the corner of the box went straight into her left eye leaving her in severe pain and screaming.

Toni, who lives in Leeds and owns a chain of nurseries in North Lincolnshire, said: “It was just one of them stupid things. I was wrapping Christmas presents for the kids for my partner while he had gone out. We’ve a log burner so when the cardboard boxes come on we put them on the burner.

“I tried to rip the box, it wasn’t having it. I pulled and the corner of the box went straight into my eye. I just kept pulling and pulling and pulling.

“I can only see out of my left eye, it went into my right eye is lazy. It went into my bad eye otherwise I could have been blinded.

“I will never look at cardboard boxes in the same way again. I hobbled over screaming, my children 11 and 14 were there. The 14-year-old completely ignored me and my 11-year-old ran straight over and put me in his arms. The 14-year-old thought I was being overdramatic.”

Toni, who did finish all wrapping her presents, went to Vision Express in Wetherby and was able to diagnose her problem.

Staff at the shop also managed to get her the medication she needed, saving her a trip to St James' University Hospital where she would have had to go through A&E.

“To save me going to hospital they spoke to the doctors at Jimmy’s and sorted what medication I needed,” Toni said.

“They didn’t charge me a penny and made a horrible situation stress free for me. I can’t thank them enough.

“I was so pleased I didn’t have to go to the hospital, my partner is shielding. It’s the last thing we wanted to do.

“It’s amazing how quickly your eyes heal, I never realised. I went from being in severe pain to the next day just soreness. Obviously, I can see well out of it but I couldn’t see that well out it anyway.”
