A Leeds MP has said that he is "appalled" to hear that two fellow members of the party in the city have been suspended.
Richard Burgon MP, who represents East Leeds, said that Kath Owen and Suzi Williams have both been suspended from the party in what he called a "clampdown on party democracy".
The two have been mentioned in a separate story on the matter saying that they are the chair and secretary of the Leeds North East Constituency Labour Party.
In a tweet sent out yesterday, Mr Burgon said: "Appalled to hear that Kath Owen and Suzi Williams have been suspended from the Labour Party.
"Kath and Suzi are part of the beating heart of Labour in Leeds.
"As volunteers they’ve done so much. They belong in the Labour Party. This clampdown on party democracy must end."
The couple have also both been mentioned in a story on the socialist website Socialist Appeal titled "Labour purge intensifies" in which it says the couple are part of a number of recent suspensions in the party.
It says: "Other notable recent suspensions include the chair and secretary of Leeds North East CLP, Kath Owen and Suzi Williams."
The Leeds North East Constituency Labour Party has been contacted for comment.
Responding to the allegations, a spokesman for the Labour Party said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures and any appropriate action is taken."
He added that the party "cannot comment on individual cases".
