Leeds MP Alex Sobel has decided to cancel upcoming meetings and isolate himself after being told that he may have come into contact with someone carrying the coronavirus.
Mr Sobel, MP for Leeds North West, says he is "not exhibiting any symptoms" but won't be attending any meetings until Thursday, February 20, when "the 14-day potential incubation period will end".
The Labour politician took the decision to self isolate after learning that he had attended a conference in Westminster along with someone who was subsequently diagnosed with the virus.
Mr Sobel tweeted: "I attended the UK bus summit on February 6, where there was an attendee who has tested positive for coronavirus.
"Whilst I have been informed that I am at very low risk, I have called 111 to be formally assessed.
"As a precaution, we have cancelled all engagements until next Thursday when the 14-day potential incubation period will end.
"If you think you may have been in contact with someone who has coronavirus, self-isolate and call 111 for an assessment."
He added: "Just to be clear I’m not exhibiting any symptoms."
Public Health England says nine people in the UK have now tested positive for the virus, which can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and death.
There were more than 200 people at the conference, which was organised by Transport Times, the Financial Times reports.
The World Health Organisation has declared the coronavirus a "public health emergency" of international concern.
In China, where the outbreak began, more than 1,380 people have died and the number of confirmed cases has reached 63,922.
