Leeds Morrisons worker battling Covid-19 in hospital named after colleague's tragic death

A Morrisons employee who is in a Leeds hospital after testing positive for coronavirus is now out of ICU, but remains in hospital in a critical condition.

James 'Jim' Hush, 63, has been in hospital for a number of weeks after testing positive for Covid-19 in October.

James' wife, Karen, said that while he is out of ICU, he still has a long way to go in making his recovery as he remains in a compromised condition.

Karen, who confirmed that James has an underlying health issues and shielded throughout the first lockdown stated that he returned to work just a few weeks ago.

Karen was worried of the thought of her husband returning to work, after James had been in hospital with a number of medical complications last year.

Just a few weeks after he had returned to work, he became ill towards the end of last week, developing a persistent cough.

He tested positive for coronavirus and his symptoms worsened. He was sent straight to hospital and had to undergo two major operations.

Karen said: "He is doing much better than he was a few days ago, which is extremely relieving.

"He still has a long way to go to getting back to himself though, he's still very much in hospital and needing treatment and care.

"He's currently on oxygen, but they are hopeful.

"Its been an extremely tough few days."

The news comes after LeedsLive learned a woman had tragically died with Covid-19 following the alleged outbreak at the store at The Merrion Centre in Leeds.

It has been claimed 28 employees tested positive in October. Morrisons denied this figure but did not confirm how many staff did test positive for the virus.

After learning that Jim's colleague, Hansa, had sadly passed away, she said: "It's just absolutely heartbreaking. I feel so badly for her family.

"My husband isn't in the best of conditions right now, but I'm sure he'll soon be devastated to hear that she has passed away - she was very well liked."

When asked if Morrisons were aware of the man's situation, LeedsLive was not given an answer, but a spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with our colleague's family at this very difficult time.

"A small number of people at our Merrion site have tested positive for the coronavirus and we have robust measures in place to ensure it is as safe as possible for colleagues and customers."

All the questions Morrisons refused to answer

  • When was there an outbreak of coronavirus at the Leeds Merrion Centre store?
  • How many employees tested positive?
  • How many employees had to self-isolate?
  • Did the store undergo a deep clean after the outbreak?
  • Are you aware that an employee is in ICU with Covid-19?

Another woman close to the man, who did not wish to be named, said she was 'disgusted' by the situation.

"People have tested positive, and a poor lady has died. I feel absolutely awful for the family.

"I'm very worried about his health too, of course."
