Leeds morning headlines as Liverpool drop Harry Wilson asking price and reaction to Manchester City draw

Here are your Leeds morning headlines for Sunday, October 4.

Kalvin Phillips explains game-changing tactical shift

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips has explained the shift in approach that benefited himself and saw Leeds grow into the game in last night’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

City dominated the early periods of the game, putting Leeds under pressure and aggressively pressing Phillips, denying him space and time to progress the ball.

But after a whirlwind opening 20 minutes, things changed and Leeds started to match the visitors, even shading possession (52%) over the full 90 minutes.

“A lot of the play goes through me and they set out to do that (block him), and they did in the first half,” he told Sky Sports.

“I knew I had to change my game up and get on the ball in different ways. In the second half, the other midfielders did that well as well.

“We gave them a little bit too much respect in the first 20. We won the ball back a couple of times and thought we could have a go at these.

“We came out for the second-half and we made a couple of tackles and counter-attacks. I think we did well.”

Pep Guardiola’s delivers ‘incredible’ Leeds verdict

City boss Guardiola has praised Leeds for trying to win in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road.

The 49-year-old, who has won two Premier League titles with City, evidently has lots of respect for his opposite number Marcelo Bielsa, which shone through in his post-match verdict after Rodrigo’s second-half tap-in cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s early opener.

“It was an entertaining game, a good game, both teams tried to win from minute one until 90 minutes,” the Catalan coach said.

“We had really good moments in the first 30 minutes. We could have made a bigger margin in our result and after that they had good moments because they are an incredible team.

“They destroyed the Championship last season, they done so good so far, but in the last 10 minutes we were there and trying to win.

“It was a good game.”

Here’s that verdict in full.

Liverpool drop Harry Wilson asking price

According to a new report in The Sun (printed edition), Liverpool will allow Harry Wilson to leave the club for £10m.

It’s long been reported that the Reds had set an asking price of £20m for the academy graduate, who has impressed out on loan at Bournemouth and Derby County in the last two seasons.

Having allowed Rhian Brewster to sign for Sheffield United, it appears that Liverpool’s strategy in the transfer market is to recoup the £70m outlay on Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas by selling their highly-rated young players on the fringes of the first-team squad.

Wilson is one name, in particular, that’s dominated the gossip columns this summer with regards to a potential Leeds move as they look to cash-in on the Wales international, but with the window set to close in the coming days, they may have to change their bargaining price.
