Leeds man's fury as family gravestone 'dumped on the ground' at Holbeck Cemetery

A Leeds man has claimed his family's gravestone was tossed onto someone else's grave by maintenance workers at Holbeck Cemetery.

Geoff Smith was furious when he arrived at the centuries-old cemetery, off Fairfax Road, and found the headstone commemorating three of his relatives had been removed from their graves.

He claimed council workers had moved it "for maintenance issues so they can cut the grass more easily".

Mr Smith said the stone had been placed on a plinth but was now laid face down nearby.

"I came this morning and found the gravestone laid face down, right there where there's no soil," he said.

"There's three members of my family in this hole.

"I'm going to come back with some building materials and I'm going to stand this gravestone back up."

Mr Smith claimed the cemetery was more like a "rubble site" than a graveyard.

He described: "People's memorials face down in the dirt, pushed down into other people's graves."

Gravestones are tested to see if they might easily fall over and are sometimes laid down horizontally for safety reasons.

Leeds city council has previously stated they have a "legal duty to act quickly where the condition of graves and headstones could present a risk to the public, and to ensure that our cemeteries are safe".
