Leeds man given restraining order after sending offensive emails and Facebook message to Therese Coffey

A Leeds man has been told he must not contact an MP after he sent offensive emails to her.

Robert Harrison, 58, of Oakwell Avenue in Armley, was also made the subject of a 12-week sentence suspended for 12 months for the emails he sent to Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Therese Coffey.

Court documents show Harrison, who was sentenced at Leeds Magistrates' Court on November 8, sent emails and a Facebook message to Ms Coffey. The documents said he "sent by means of a public electronic communications network matter, namely e-mails to Therese Coffey MP, that was grossly offensive, or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character."

Harrison was found guilty of three counts of the charge. Two related to emails sent on November 5 and November 6 last year, and the third related to a Facebook message, sent between October 18 and November 7 last year.

As well as the suspended sentence, he was told he must complete 15 days rehabilitation requirement and 80 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months. A restraining order will prohibit him contacting Ms Coffey directly or indirectly until November 7, 2025.

Harrison was also ordered to pay a £128 surcharge to fund victim services and £650 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Ms Coffey has served as MP for Suffolk Coastal since 2010 and has served as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Health and Social care and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. She served as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from September to October 2022 under the leadership of former Prime Minister, Liz Truss and was last month appointed by Rishi Sunak as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
