Leeds make January plans for on-loan Arsenal star Eddie Nketiah

Leeds are looking at replacements for Eddie Nketiah - but remain hopeful Arsenal will not recall the England Under-21 star in January.

Arsenal can cut short Nketiah’s season-long loan when the transfer window opens if he does not play enough minutes for Leeds.

The striker has yet to start in the Championship and his 10 league appearances have come from the bench.

Nketiah, 20, who has scored five goals for Leeds from his 12 games, was due to resume training on Thursday after being sidelined for the last month with an abdominal injury.

Leeds feel he is a key part of Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion-chasing squad and believe he will get game time over the busy period between now and January.

They are optimistic Arsenal will allow Nketiah, who has scored three senior goals for the Gunners, to see out the campaign at Elland Road.

But director of football Victor Orta is looking at alternative strikers in case Arsenal do recall him.

Nketiah has had to play a supporting role to Bielsa’s No 1 striker Patrick Bamford and the former Chelsea and Middlesbrough striker has scored twice in the four games Nketiah has missed.

Leeds have won those four matches to boost their promotion bid, including scoring late winners against Luton and Reading in their last two games.

Jack Harrison, who netted five minutes from time against Reading on Tuesday, claims their high fitness levels mean they can keep attacking until the very end.

“I think it really showed the fitness of our team late on in a game,” said the Manchester City loanee.

“You have all these players making runs forward, big, long, hard runs forward just to try to get that goal in the last few minutes.

“With the fitness we have, we’re able to do that and it showed in the last few minutes."
