Leeds M&S stores at risk as 110 store closures announced

Leeds Marks & Spencer branches face an uncertain future as the chain announced plans to shut 85 full stores and 25 Simply Food outlets in a bid to boost company performance.

As per the Daily Mirror, the closures are part of a shake-up which will also involve the opening of new stores and the re-introduction of the M&S' "Per Una" range.

110 stores will shut in the next five years, yet the good news is that M&S plan to open 20 new clothes stores and 75 new food stores, saying that overall their 'store base is likely to remain broadly level'.

A change has been announced after Leeds-founded M&S' revenue dropped 3 per cent and profit before tax fell 9.9 per cent - shares fell 4 per cent after the results.

Marks & Spencer chief executive Steve Rowe said: "We are deep into the first phase of our transformation programme and continue to make good progress restoring the basics and fixing many of the legacy issues we face."

At this stage no job losses are forecast and M&S say that staff will be informed as soon as possible about any store closures that will affect their place of work.

The M&S Simply Food site in Cross Gates closed recently and relocated to The Springs at Thorpe Park.
