Leeds Labour leader dismisses claims party is 'neglecting' voters after retaining control of council

Cllr James Lewis has rejected suggestions that the ruling Labour party is "neglecting" voters across the city.

The claim was made by newly-elected councillor Mike Foster after he won the Tory's only new seat in the 2021 Leeds local election from Labour, in the Ardsley and Robin Hood ward.

Cllr Foster accused the Labour party of "bullying" and said a major factor in ousting them in his ward was due to "neglect" from the current administration.

However, it is something that Cllr Lewis vehemently denies.

"I don't recognise that picture at all," he said.

"Looking across Leeds, we held lots of seats - many of them with increased majorities.

"We've got a really great team of candidates and councillors who have been out working throughout the pandemic.

"Our candidate in Ardsley and Robin Hood was an NHS pharmacist who has really been supporting people through the pandemic. So to say we've been ignoring people is missing what a great set of results we've had in Leeds today."

A number of Labour councillors in Leeds turned their frustrations on party leader Sir Keir Stramer, after a number of high-profile casualties in other parts of England in the local elections.

Cllr Helen Hayden said the party leadership "need to listen to people".

However, Cllr Lewis refused to be drawn on whether he will rally against Mr Starmer.

"I've really been focussed on Leeds in the last few months," he said.

"Here we've seen nearly all our councillors and candidates reelected and some really good results where we came close to taking seats off the opposition.

"I'm sure there will be a lot of analysis moving forward, but my focus has been the great set of results we've had in Leeds today. That's what I'm really pleased and proud about."
