Leeds Kirkgate Market restaurant found storing food in 'dirty containers'

Inspectors slammed a Leeds Kirkgate Market restaurant, where they found food stored in "dirty" containers in the "dirty" kitchen.

Chinese restaurant and takeaway Maxi's Rotisserie was given a damning two-star food hygiene rating after inspectors visited on October 4. A two-star hygiene rating means improvements are necessary, in this instance mostly with the way food is handled.

Inspectors gave Maxi's owners a list of instructions in their report, it said: “The containers that food is kept in is dirty. Equipment was dirty and needed cleaning – fridges and freezers.”

Some food containers were also found broken, which can cause physical contamination. The shelving work surfaces in the kitchen were also “dirty” and the hand contact points needed cleaning.

The chest freezer was being used as a prep bench and was covered with a coating that was flaking -“This can cause physical contamination to food”.

Floors in kitchen area needed cleaning, especially at wall to floor junctions. The ‘Everyday Cleaning Record’ wasn't being followed. Staff also didn't know what the food safety manual was and inspectors said they were in need of training.

They were also found defrosting food in the sink in warm water overnight. Cloths found rinsed in the wash hand basin – which was in the kitchen where it was “not suitably located”. There was no system or procedure to manage food allergens.

Maxi's Rotisserie was asked for a comment.
