Leeds Kill The Bill protest announced for Millenium Square on Good Friday

A “peaceful” Kill The Bill march has been planned to take place on Good Friday in Leeds.

The demonstration organised by Kill The Bill Leeds is set to go ahead on April 2 from 1pm-3pm at Millenium Square in the city centre.

The event comes following widespread opposition to The Police, Sentencing and Courts Bill which gives police powers to crack down on peaceful protests.

The measures in the Bill will allow the police to 'take a more proactive approach in managing highly disruptive protests causing serious disruption to the public' and it includes police being able to impose start and finish times and police noise levels on static protests.

However, thousands of people have taken to the streets opposing the legislation and it has been in the spotlight after criticism of how officers handled Sarah Everard's vigil in Clapham.

Kill The Bill protests have also taken place in Sheffield and Manchester as well as Bristol where scenes turned violent after organisers clashed with the police.

Organisers for the Leeds march state this will be a peaceful protest following a demonstration organised by Reclaim the Streets Leeds and Block The Bill earlier this month.

The event shared on Facebook, reads: “Building on the fantastic work of Reclaim The Streets Leeds and Block The Bill, there will be a peaceful protest opposing the policing Bill on Friday the 2nd April.

“The event will be inclusive and representative of all communities in Leeds, particularly seeking to give voice to those communities disproportionately feted by the policing bill.

“Many organisations are coming together in solidarity to organise the event.”
