Leeds has a 'real chance' of being in Tier 2 before Christmas, says council boss

There is a "real chance" Leeds will be in the more relaxed Tier 2 before Christmas, say council leaders.

Leeds, along with the rest of West Yorkshire, will be placed in the toughest zone for Covid-19 restrictions when lockdown lifts on December 2.

But there is hope that, after plummeting infection rates during the national lockdown, more sacrifices made between now and mid December, could result in the city being moved down into Tier 2.

The Government will review the progress made by each local authority over the coming weeks, with an update on tiers being changed coming on December 16.

Council leader Judith Blake said: "Today we spoke to ministers and stressed the importance of the next two weeks.

"We want them the government work with us - for them to see how our infection rates are decreasing.

"The review will take place on the 16th and if the government feels we are still moving in the right direction, there is a real chance we could move down into Tier 2 in December.

"So, these two weeks are incredibly important. Everyone has a part to play. We can continue to make progress."

Under the Tier 3 restrictions, hospitality venues, such as bars , pubs, cafes and restaurants will have to remain closed, however, they are permitted to continue sales by takeaway, click-and-collect, drive-through or delivery services.

Residents are not permitted to meet socially indoors or in most outdoor places with anybody you do not live with, or who is not in your support bubble, this includes in any private garden or at most outdoor venues.

Council leader Blake added: "We want to pay tribute to everyone who has worked so hard - the council, NHS, all of our partners and the public themselves for helping to drive down the infection rates.

"We are very disappointed to be in Tier 3 and we feel very deeply for those in the hospitality sector and in entertainment who are so affected by restrictions in Tier 3."
