Leeds group ignore lockdown and travel over 70 miles 'just for a drive'

Four people who were caught by police after they ignored the coronavirus lockdown restrictions and drove over 70 miles said they were out "just for a drive".

North Yorkshire Police fined the group and sent them back to Leeds after they were caught driving around Whitby on Saturday, April 25.

Officer Mark Patterson tweeted: "This vehicle contained three adults and a child who today came from Leeds to Whitby 'just for a drive'.

"This definitely isn't an essential journey and they were required to return immediately, each adult was fined for breach of the Covid-19 regulations."

The UK remains under lockdown, after the government said that people should remain at home and only leave the house to go to work, buy food or medicine, exercise, or receive medical treatment.

It has also closed schools, non-essential stores, restaurants, cinemas and gyms.

The restrictions were brought in to curb the spread of coronavirus, which has infected more than 157,000 people in the UK so far and claimed over 21,000 lives.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has praised people for adhering to the social distancing measures and said "we are beginning to turn the tide", but warned that there is still a "risk of a second major outbreak and huge loss of life".

Mr Johnson also urged people and businesses across the country to remain patient during the lockdown.

He added: "I refuse to throw away all the effort and the sacrifice of the British people and risk a second outbreak.

"I ask you to contain your impatience because I believe we are coming to the end of this first phase of the conflict."
