Leeds grandmother horrified as man spits in blind dog's face

A Leeds grandmother was left horrified after a man spat in the face of her blind dog.

Sandra De Laat, 58, says the elderly man spat at her Yorkshire Terrier when she was playing in the front garden, at around 9am on March 12.

The 58-year-old, who lives on Ring Road in Middleton, says her dog, who is called Maisie, lost her sight after being diagnosed with diabetes and she was wearing a coat that lets people know she is blind.

"I was watching him and he stopped and spat all over her," she said. "There was so much, I think he heard her barking as he was walking down the road and cleared his lungs.

"I was in my pyjamas but I flung open the door and shouted: 'That's disgusting, how dare you spit on my dog!'

"It was absolutely disgusting. It was all down her face, on her collar and all down her coat.

"It was in her eye too. She's blind and we have to look after her eyes and always clean them so they don't get infected.

"He walks past the house a lot and he knows she's got that coat on which says she's blind. He's supposed to be a neighbour, he lives round the corner."

Mrs De Laat says the spitter was a short and stocky elderly man, with grey hair and he appeared to be in his 70s.

She added: "Everyone is telling me to report him but I think it's a bit trivial for the police who have a lot to deal with. I might tell the RSPCA so they can have a word with him.

"I need to know that someone will talk to him and that he won't do it again. Going out in the garden is all she''s got, she loves it."
