Leeds given guard of honour by 'Spygate' rivals Derby after pointed Twitter posts

Leeds United received a guard of honour from Derby County on Sunday afternoon as they played their first match as Championship winners.

The Whites secured promotion to the Premier League as West Bromwich Albion fell to a 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town on Friday evening.

And they were handed the Championship title on Saturday as Brentford were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City.

Their status as champions means Rams players lined up before the match to welcome Leeds onto the Pride Park turf, and they will receive another guard of honour in their final game of the season, against Charlton Athletic on Wednesday.

There was an added edge to the pre-match tribute in light of last year's 'Spygate' saga, in which Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa admitted sending a spy to Derby's training ground before the Whites beat the Rams 2-0.

Leeds were fined £200,000 following an EFL investigation into the incident and there has since been a heightened rivalry between the two teams.

The feud was escalated further at the end of last season, when Leeds squandered a commanding position to lose 4-3 on aggregate to the Rams in the play-off semi-finals.

And the Whites were quick to poke fun at Derby with some pre-match tweets, posting some general shots of Pride Park within a binocular lens - harking back to 'Spygate'.

Leeds also made sure their status as a Premier League club as of next season does not go unnoticed

They wrote: "Premier League vs Championship today, as we take on Derby County in our penultimate game of the season."

Regardless of the banter, Derby congratulated Leeds with a touch of class with owner Melvyn Morris giving the club a bottle of Champagne.

Leeds appreciated the gesture and tweeted: "Touch of class from Derby County Football Club and Mel Morris. Thank you!"
