Leeds for Europe among hundreds of thousands at Put It To The People march to stop Brexit

Protest groups from Leeds and across Yorkshire are among the hundreds of thousands marching through the streets of London urging the government to put Brexit to a people's vote.

Demonstrators are heading to Parliament Square to rally as part of the Put It To The People campaign, which has seen unprecedented support from all over the UK.

Among those marching through the capital are hundreds of people from Leeds.

Pro-EU campaign group Leeds for Europe said that around 330 people were part of their official group in London today, with a further 50 supporters from Wakefield and another 200 from Sheffield joining the masses, as organisers say the number of people joining the protest could be close to one million.

A statement posted on the Leeds for Europe website said: "After 700,000 marched last October all the signs are that this march will be even larger and more significant.  We need to make sure it is, as Brexit Day is almost upon us.

"With 12 pro-EU groups now operating in Yorkshire we are aiming to create the largest Yorkshire bloc ever seen on an anti-Brexit march.

"We must make this march so huge that Brexit is stopped in its tracks."

Leeds for Europe were behind the Great Northern March in Leeds, which came on the same weekend last year and saw the city centre come to a standstill.

Today's anti-Brexit protest comes on the same weekend that a number of go-slow drives were planned for motorways across Yorkshire , including the M62, M1 and A1(M), in support of leaving the EU.

However, there have been no reported sightings of the M62 go-slow today, which had been organised by the Brexit Protest and Direct Action Group UK group on Facebook.
