Leeds finally sees coronavirus infection rate go down - but still records most new cases in Yorkshire

Leeds' coronavirus infection rate has fallen slightly - but the city still reported the most new cases in Yorkshire in the last seven days.

Public Health England's rolling seven-day figures show in the last week, the city has recorded 565 new cases - and its infection rate has dropped slightly from 74.3 (cases per 100,000 people) to 71.2.

Neighbouring Bradford, another Covid-19 hotspot in the region, also saw its infection rate drop from 92.1 to 88.4, recording 477 new cases in seven days.

However, Kirklees - where recent local lockdown measures have been eased in most of the district - has seen a significant rise in the latest figures.

Kirklees saw the largest rise in infection rate, with 311 new cases recorded in the last week, raising the infection rate from 47.8 to 70.7.

Health chiefs in Kirklees are closely monitoring two more areas where numbers of Covid-19 cases are going up.

The figures, for the seven days to September 14, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent three days (September 15-17) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on September 17 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
