Leeds fans will love what Noel Whelan said about Elland Road, Tottenham and those Amazon links

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan is hopeful that the Championship club never explores the possibility of selling the naming rights of their Elland Road stadium.

Whelan has made the claim following reports that Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur are in talks about selling the naming rights of their Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to global giant Amazon.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Amazon are in talks with Spurs about purchasing the rights of their stadium in a £250m deal.

However, as proven in the past by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, when he made the decision to change the name of St James' Park to the Sports Direct Arena, it did not go down well with the supporters.

And former Leeds man Whelan is adamant that a similar response would be echoed by Leeds' fans if Elland Road had its name changed.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “It would be very strange. I would like to keep Elland Road but you can never say never. Everyone moves with the times.

“We are talking about extending the stadium which I think is great rather than building a new one.

“Elland Road has a great history so I would like to think it would never happen because it means a lot to people. I do not think the fans would want anything else.

“With Tottenham, it is different because it is not White Hart Lane so it does not make any difference.”
